Finding Community at Cornell
Blog Post
Hey everyone! My name is Kiran Abraham-Aggarwal, and I’m a junior in the School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR) from Poughkeepsie, New York. My college journey has been an adventure of discovering and immersing myself in the vibrant communities that make up the heart of Cornell. Reflecting on my experiences, I'm compelled to share how the community's essence deeply permeates through every corner of our campus, creating a sense of belonging and togetherness.
The Ambassadors: My First Foray into Community Building
My journey into the myriad of Cornell communities began my freshman year with the ILR Ambassadors. This group of dedicated students works tirelessly to create an inviting and informative space for new and prospective students. Being a part of this team taught me the value of connection and warmth—a reflection of the same feelings that greeted me upon my arrival at Cornell. Through organizing coffee chats, Cornell Days, and tours of Ives, we didn't just help others navigate their way into Cornell; we built lasting bonds among ourselves, fostering a supportive and welcoming environment that mirrored the larger campus ethos.
Finding My Tribe in Pre-professional Organizations
Also, in my freshman year, I had the chance to explore Cornell Alternative Investments, a pre-professional club on campus. Pre-professional groups offer a platform for students to rally around shared ambitions and interests, paving the way for future career paths. Here, I found some of my closest friends, united by our common goals and aspirations. This experience underscored the notion that Cornell is a place where you can find your niche and thrive among like-minded individuals, all while supporting each other’s professional growth and personal development.
The Extracurricular Mosaic: Clubs and Organizations Galore
There are many opportunities to foster community on campus, which often extend well beyond academic and professional spheres. Cornell is a melting pot of extracurricular activities, ranging from sports teams and cultural groups to more unique organizations like the coffee-tasting club! Each offers an opportunity to explore passions and interests in a collective setting. My involvement in these groups has allowed me to pursue my hobbies and connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds, each with their own stories and experiences that enrich our community fabric.
A Campus United in Diversity and Passion
What stands out most about Cornell is everyone’s unwavering dedication to nurturing a sense of community across campus. Here, community is not just a concept but a lived experience. Whether through pre-professional organizations, club sports, or other interest groups, Cornellians are empowered to engage, connect, and find joy in shared experiences. This ethos of inclusivity and camaraderie makes Cornell not just a place to study but a home where everyone can find their place and thrive.
