My favorite aspect of Cornell is the clock tower. Its chimes are heard loud and proud across campus: the heartbeat of the university. In essence, it is the heart of Cornell, beating steadily through generations of students attending, graduating, and returning, and as long as it rings, you know the university is vibrant and full of life.
Cornell has been one of the best things that has ever happened to me. Though Ithaca is rural, it is an excellent balance between a vibrant academic environment and access to nature. The campus challenges me intellectually while providing a supportive community where I can grow both academically and personally.
I am deeply fascinated by medieval history and paleography. While I chose to major in government and philosophy, studying abroad sparked a newfound interest in the history of medieval texts and thought, which connects closely to philosophy and law. The classes I have taken at Cornell have challenged me to think deeply and ask critical questions.
I rely on tutors and academic advisors, whom I discovered gradually over the years. They have been invaluable for helping me navigate courses and make the most of my academic experience.
I wish I had known more about the distribution requirements and the option to take some of those classes pass/fail.
I found my friends and community by joining clubs like The Cornell Daily Sun, the Cornell Catholic Community, and the Student Union Board. Being part of these groups connected me with both peers and older members who taught me a great deal, and now I have the opportunity to mentor younger members.
I like to go to Trillium or Libe Cafe. I enjoy the variety at Trillium, and Libe Cafe is perfect for a quick snack or drink when I'm studying in the library.
I chose Cornell because of its commitment to academic excellence and its location. It is important to be in a space where you are challenged because challenge fosters motivation, and motivation drives growth and success.
I greatly enjoy connecting with nature, whether that be by walking, exploring trails, or simply soaking in the beauty of Ithaca's natural environment.
One of my favorite memories that I have made at Cornell was watching the Cornell-Harvard men's hockey game. As a lifelong hockey fan, experiencing the energy and excitement of the game in person was exhilarating.
I am inspired by people who have persevered through difficult circumstances and made their own stories a success. Their resilience motivates me to pursue my goals and overcome challenges.
One of my favorite classes that I have taken at Cornell was a course about the history of time. It explored how time is a social construct and how society's understanding of it has evolved alongside new work environments and technological change. We studied the invention of mechanical clocks, the creation of time zones, and how the Industrial Revolution reorganized daily life around productivity. The class showed me that the way we measure and value time reflects cultural and economic priorities rather than universal truths. I began to see how structured my own schedule is and how much of that structure is shaped by institutional expectations.
One of the most impactful parts of my Cornell experience was studying abroad in Scotland. Living and learning in a different country pushed me outside my comfort zone in the best ways possible. It gave me the chance to reflect, grow, and explore questions about who I am and what I would like from the future. Studying abroad not only expanded my academic perspective but helped me discover new passions and interests. It reminded me that learning does not only happen in classrooms. Sometimes it happens through new cultures, conversations, and experiences you never expected to have.
Cornell combines rigorous academics, a supportive community, and access to unparalleled natural beauty. The opportunity to grow intellectually and personally in such a dynamic environment makes the experience unlike any other.
The A.D. White Library is my favorite place to study on campus. Its architectural splendor, quiet atmosphere, and majestic views of the slope make it an inspiring and peaceful place to focus.
My favorite spot on campus is atop the clock tower when the chime concerts are playing. Standing there and looking out over all of campus feels magical. It reminds me of everything Cornell offers and inspires me with the sense that I can go out and make an impact as a Cornellian.
