While it's hard to choose just one thing about Cornell, the people are definitely my favorite part. Coming from a smaller high school, I was both excited and nervous about the size of the university. I wanted to meet new people and explore different communities, but it can feel daunting to arrive at a campus with thousands of students. What surprised me most is how quickly Cornell began to feel small. Whether through classes, clubs, dorm life, or even local food spots, there are so many natural ways to connect with people that the campus quickly starts to feel like home.
I love being in the College of Arts & Sciences because it encourages intellectual exploration. While I'm majoring in psychology, I've also taken classes like Introduction to German Culture and Thought and Topics in Architecture—courses I probably wouldn't have considered otherwise. The college is intentionally interdisciplinary, and I've really enjoyed making connections across different fields both inside and outside the classroom.
I'm majoring in psychology, and what I love most about studying it at Cornell is how the curriculum teaches students how to think like researchers. My professors emphasize how experiments are designed, interpreted, and questioned. Their approach helps me develop skills to analyze research independently and pursue my own academic interests outside the classroom.
One of my go-to campus resources is the Einhorn Center for Community Engagement. I first learned about it through the Meinig Scholarship, and it has since been an incredible resource for exploring research and leadership opportunities. The center helped me think strategically about how to use my research funding and connect with opportunities that align with my interests. It's a great place for students who want guidance on how to get more involved both on and off campus.
One thing I wish I had known when applying is how supportive the academic environment is at Cornell. There are so many built-in opportunities to get help and deepen your understanding, including discussion sections, review sessions, and accessible office hours. Professors genuinely want students to succeed, and that support system makes the transition to college academics much more manageable.
My favorite class so far has been Developmental Psychology with Professor Goldstein. His enthusiasm for the subject made the material incredibly engaging, and the course inspired me to apply to work in his research lab, which I was fortunate enough to join.
Cornell's ethos of "any person, any study" really comes to life on campus. The university offers an incredible range of academic opportunities, and students genuinely embrace that interdisciplinary spirit. Conversations here can range from discussing a new ice cream flavor developed in a food science class to visiting Fuertes Observatory for an astronomy event.
I'm inspired by the idea that college is what you make of it. At Cornell, there are so many opportunities to pursue ideas and passions, and the people around you are constantly exploring new interests. Being surrounded by curious, interdisciplinary thinkers motivates me to keep learning and trying new things.
After graduation, I would like to explore a variety of paths, but two that I am very excited about are teaching and conducting psychological research.
My favorite place to study is the Mann Library. The light wood and natural light make it an energizing space to work in. I also like that it's large enough to move around throughout the day if I want a change of scenery. Plus, the cafe downstairs is perfect for grabbing a snack or coffee during study breaks.
My favorite spot on campus is the Cornell Botanic Gardens. It's a beautiful place to walk, relax, and take in the scenery. I especially enjoy sitting there and people-watching while appreciating the natural beauty of Cornell's campus.
In my first few weeks at Cornell, I made an effort to say yes to new experiences and meet as many people as possible. During orientation, that meant inviting people to explore downtown Ithaca or figure out the TCAT bus system together. Most freshmen are also looking for connections, so taking the first step really goes a long way. Joining clubs also helped me find my community. I signed up for a variety of organizations, and even though I hadn't done a cappella before coming to Cornell, joining Callbaxx is one of the highlights of my college experience so far. Bonding with people through music has created some of my closest friendships.
I didn't make my final decision until I attended the admitted students' day. That weekend, I went to an a cappella concert, toured campus, attended panels, and most importantly, had candid conversations with current students. What stood out to me was how different everyone was, yet they all shared the same grounded, approachable energy and genuine passion for Cornell.
My go-to spot on campus is Goldie's Cafe. I usually go there with friends for breakfast and get a muffin. Recently, my favorite drink has been the seasonal peach matcha, so I've been making the most of it while it's still on the menu.
One of my favorite things to do in Ithaca is go to the Apple Festival at the beginning of the year. It's a great way to explore the local community with friends, enjoy amazing food, and celebrate the start of the fall season.
One of my favorite Cornell memories was finishing my first a cappella performance with Callbaxx. I was nervous about performing in front of a large audience, but being on stage with such a supportive group helped me push through that fear. After the performance, we all hugged backstage and kept saying, "We did it!" That moment showed me how much the community here helps you grow and overcome challenges.
