A little about me

Hi! I’m Katie, a sophomore in Arts & Sciences pursuing a major in Cognitive Science and a minor in Health Policy, and I’m on the premed track. One of my favorite parts about being in Arts & Sciences is the ever-present opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary study, which I have experienced firsthand in my time here so far.

Starting the day early

Today, I’m starting off with a quick breakfast at Morrison Dining before heading off to Organic Chemistry 2 lecture at 9am, a class that I’m taking to fulfill my premed requirements. So far, I have found it difficult but also rewarding to learn. While it’s common college advice to avoid early morning classes, sometimes I like to get my classes out of the way early on in my day!

After class, I have a gap in my schedule, so I’m off to study in Olin Library. My favorite study spot is the Kroch Library within Olin (also known as the Asian Reading Room), where I spend lots of hours studying with the help of an iced matcha latte from Libe Cafe.

A busy afternoon

I then grab a quick lunch with some friends at Cafe Jennie, located inside the Cornell Store. If you ever check it out, I highly recommend the chicken Milano sandwich!

Next up in my day is a shift at Cornell Career Services, where I work as an Employer Relations Student Associate. Besides giving me a break from classes and studying, my job also allows me to meet tons of new people with a variety of different interests and backgrounds, from my coworkers who I chat with during shifts to the students who come in. I also work closely with employers via Handshake, and help students navigate the resources offered by Career Services.

My last class of the day is Developmental Psychology at 3pm, a class I’m taking for my Cognitive Science major and probably my favorite class I’ve taken so far! We learn all about how babies develop into adults from all aspects, including language, perception, social understanding, and more. It has been super fun all around and you should definitely take it if you get the chance!

Finishing off the day

After class, I’m headed back to North Campus to get some work done in my dorm. I live in Ganędagǫ: Hall, which is one of the newly built dorms on North for upperclassmen.

Soon enough, it’s time for dinner! I get dinner at Morrison most nights because it’s so convenient and offers lots and lots of options every day.

My last activity of the day is Early Music Lab at 7pm, which is a chamber music ensemble “class” that I joined freshman year. I have been playing the violin for many years and have loved getting the chance to keep playing music in a more relaxed environment with my peers. In this ensemble, we play music from the Baroque period with instruments and stylistic details authentic to that time. Whether your interests are in music, sports, art, etc., there are so so many opportunities to keep up your passions at Cornell, regardless of your skill level or time commitment. I would recommend taking a look at all the programs and clubs offered!

I end the day with some more studying in my dorm, before going to sleep and preparing for tomorrow. Every day looks different for me, and some are busier than others, but something I enjoy about Cornell is that you have no shortage of opportunities to pursue whatever you’re interested in, academic or otherwise!
