Cornell's Standardized Testing Policy

Touchdown
Undergraduate Admissions

Cornell has reinstituted standardized testing requirements for first-year students seeking undergraduate admission for Fall 2026 and beyond.

Why is Cornell requiring testing?

After a multi-year study conducted by the university’s Task Force on Standardized Testing in Admissions, data showed that when reviewed in context with other application materials—such as GPA, academic rigor, extracurricular engagement, essays, and letters of recommendation—test scores help to create a more complete picture of an individual applicant. Cornell considers all applicants holistically, which means we look at all the elements of an application during our review.

What tips do we have for students in thinking about Standardized Testing?

  • Plan Ahead: Take the SAT or ACT early enough to allow your scores to be considered. The last recommended test dates are in October (for Early Decision) or December (for Regular Decision) of your senior year.
  • Testing is One Factor: Cornell considers all applicants holistically, meaning we review every piece of a student’s application and no one factor will guarantee any admissions decision outcome. Your story, academic background, experiences, and interests are our focus. We are excited to get to know you in your application materials, and testing is just one of many areas we consider.
  • Superscores are welcome at Cornell: Our review will take into account your best scores overall, whether you submit them all or participate in a Superscore/Score Choice program with the testing agency.

How can I submit my scores with my application?

Students may self-report their SAT or ACT test scores on their Common Application or QuestBridge application for reviewing purposes. For any additional scores from exam dates that fall after a student has submitted an application, students can self-report their scores using the form in their Applicant Portal. Matriculating students will be required to provide official scores for all self-reported scores upon enrolling at Cornell.
