Living in the dorms: My Experience with On-Campus Housing

As an incoming sophomore, I was placed at William Keeton House on West campus. I live on the second floor in a single suite with four other suitemates. I vividly remember when I first entered Keeton, where all the students and staff were welcoming, and any resources were readily available in the lobby. There are also resident fellows whom you can reach out to with any concerns or questions. I have a graduate resident fellow, Danielle, who has always greeted everyone with a smile and is willing to help with anything.

First, let's start with the basement floor. Keeton House has a dining hall, a lounge area, an ice machine, a vending machine, and a laundry room in the basement, which I found very convenient. Keeton Dining Hall offers breakfast and dinner on week days, brunch on weekends, and has excellent food quality, usually with a main menu, desserts, salad bar, and a variety of drink options. I would say Keeton is popular among West residents, although it is one of the smaller dining halls. Additionally, I want to highlight the family dinners that are held every Wednesday from 6 to 7 pm, where only Keeton residents can eat during that time.

Moving on to the first floor, there is a house office where you can ask any questions and receive packages. There are simple resources like the map, a list of numbers for various student services, office and dining hall hours, moving carts available, and any questions about campus life or events could be answered at the office. There is also a big study room and a conference room on the first floor, where I was able to study for my exams without walking all the way over to the library. Keeton House does not provide temperature control in your own room, but there is a ceiling fan and provides temperature control in the lobbies and hallways, which maintains the building at a comfortable temperature. My single room is very spacious with a closet, bed, desk, and drawer provided. I share a living room and a bathroom with four other girls. ll. I have been enjoying having my own space, but also being with a group of suitemates to grab food or talk to in the room. My suitemates are considerate and caring, which has been amazing, as I got to have great friends since my first day at Cornell.

Being on West Campus is very convenient! Besides my own dorm, there are four other dining halls, and there is the Noyes Recreation Center, which is the gym, a few steps away. West is right beneath the slope, but it is close to buildings like Willard Straight Hall, with another dining hall. There are other buildings like Hollister Hall, Statler Hall, or Ives Hall, where I have many of my classes, which are only a 10-minute walk away. I have found the on-campus dorms to be convenient, safe, and a fun space to meet new people and enjoy your time at Cornell!
