Ezra Cornell’s iconic phrase “I would found an institution where any person can find instruction in any study” sets the ambiance of a culturally enriched, picturesque campus that wholeheartedly embodies its mission of supplying students with once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Since my time here, I have discovered countless things to love about Cornell and its vibrant community. Where every day feels like an adventure, full of opportunities and unforgettable moments, Cornell is an unparalleled place. To share some of the “Cornell Magic,” as I call it, here are my top five favorite things about this incredible university (in no particular order).

1. Cornell’s History: Reminders of a Rich Past

Whether it be walking through the halls of the Rare and Manuscripts Collection in Carl Kroch Library, sitting in one of the seats of the infamous A.D White Library, or even just taking a stroll throughout the campus; history is everywhere. Every building tells its own story, and I love to take moments to soak it all in. Reading informational tidbits on passing signs or paintings allows me to visualize the connection to our Cornellian past. By acknowledging that the spaces we occupy today were once filled with students, scholars, and visionaries who shaped the world, I receive the everyday reminder that Cornell is not only a place of learning, but a living legacy.

2. The Food: A Culinary Delight

Currently ranked second in the nation for dining hall food, Cornell is truly a foodie’s paradise. From the fresh-farm ingredients to the menus that change simultaneously with the seasons, Cornell’s dining halls and restaurants serve an incredible variety that has students lined up eager for more. My favorite meal comes from a popular eatery located in Kennedy Hall called “Bus Stop Bagels”. They serve different combinations of bagels, sandwiches, and drinks that are delicious. I highly recommend the Route 81 order, (you will not be disappointed). Although there is such a variety of food choices here, any choice you make will be a delicious one!

3. The Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art: A Gallery of Expressions

One of the lesser-known study spots on campus is the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art. Nestled in the rightmost part of the Arts Quad, this hidden gem offers an amazing environment to relax and appreciate the serenity of famous historical artwork. With my favorite location being the infamous Japanese garden designed by Marc Peter Keane, I find it the perfect place to appreciate Cornell’s beauty and tranquility.

4. The Campus Location: The Campus On the Hill

When you come to visit Cornell, one slogan you will most likely hear is the phrase “Ithaca is Gorges.”  This catchphrase captures the stunning natural beauty you are immersed in on campus. It isn’t every day that you can say that you pass a waterfall or a spectacular gorge on your way to class. Because of Cornell’s unique hilltop location, you can experience unparalleled views and easy access to some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the Finger Lakes region. Additionally supplied by the sounds of rushing water, with numerous amounts of water cascading down the nearby waterfalls, Cornell’s natural surroundings provide a refreshing contrast to the hustle and bustle of academic life, creating a blissful atmosphere that encourages exploration and relaxation.

5. The People: To Be a Cornellian

Being from Chicago I knew no one when I first came to Cornell. For me, this transition was extremely daunting and what I was most scared of was finding friends and connections. However, when move-in day came along this past summer I found myself greeted in the most welcoming community I have ever experienced in my life. From the moment I arrived, fellow students and orientation leaders welcomed me with open arms. I quickly discovered that Cornell is a place where authenticity thrives. Although I have only been here for two months, I have made friends that will last me a lifetime. Cornell is a school that fosters connections from all walks of life and is a place that will forever hold a special place in my heart. At Cornell, I have found a community that nurtures every encapsulation of my being, making Cornell not just my institution, but my home.
