What I Enjoy About a Cornell Winter

Ithaca is well known for its cold winter seasons and the snowfall covering Cornell University's campus. I am often asked about the winters at Cornell and the chilly temperatures. Yet, the winter is where Cornell shines bright. The snow that blankets the campus is stunning, and everyone has something they can do to have fun. Here are a few things I enjoy the most during a Cornell winter.

Hockey Games

Men's ice hockey is one of the most popular sports on campus and is a fan favorite to watch. Lynah Rink is always packed for each game, with both students and Ithaca residents in a sea of red and white. At my first game, I was taken aback by all the coordinated chants, but now I know them by heart. Two rival games that Cornellians particularly look forward to are against Harvard and Colgate. The games can get quite boisterous! I got a season pass this year because I wanted to enjoy as many hockey games as possible without worrying about getting tickets every time I went since they sell out fast.

Ice Skating

You can do more than watch ice hockey games at Lynah—you can also skate there! The rink offers free skates open to both the public and students at various times throughout the week. I am enrolled in an Introduction to Skating class where I learn the basics of ice skating every Monday and Wednesday. If you already know how to skate, you can consider taking a figure skating or ice hockey class to hone your skills further and learn something new. They have different levels for the classes, so you can choose the one that best suits you.

Sledding

When enough snow accumulates on the ground, it's basically tradition for students to go sledding. If you look closely, you'll notice that students find various objects to use as sleds, like baking sheets and trays, or a brave few will bust out their skis. Some also get creative and create mini slopes to go on and test their skills on the snow. It's really fun sledding, but brace yourself for the trek back up to the top once you reach the bottom of the hill!

Outing at Greek Peak

If you want to get off campus, there is Greek Peak Mountain Resort near Cornell, where you can ski and snowboard with your friends. On Mondays, the resort offers a College Night special beginning at 3:30 PM, where you can get cheaper tickets. If you want to avoid skiing or snowboarding, there is also the Adventure Center, where you can go snow tubing or ride their mountain coaster! You can typically find a bus to the resort using Ourbus, which can pick you up from North Campus or West Campus.

Frankly, staying in and watching the snowfall in the warmth is the best way to enjoy the winters at Cornell. But whether you want to stay indoors or spend the day out in the snow, there is always something going on and something you can do!
